The name
Emory King is probably recognized by more people in Belize,
(and thousands of
people abroad), than any other except the RT. Hon. George Price, the
Father of our Country, and the Rt. Hon. Said Musa, our Prime Minister.
King, a native of Florida, U.S.A., arrived in Belize in 1953 when the yacht he was on ran aground on the Belize Barrier Reef at English Caye. A sailor turned into an instant expatriate and soon, a confirmed Belizean. From that day on he has been talking and writing
about this wonderful country.
He earned a living in public relations, insurance, real estate, tourism
and as an adviser. In the early 70s he began writing a weekly column for
the Belize Times newspaper. That led to his first book. Since then, seven
more books have flowed from his experiences and study of Belize.
He operated a hotel, became a Justice of the Peace, served on the Board of Carlisle Holdings Ltd., the Board of the Belize
Bank, and lately served as the Government's Film Commissioner. He married a Belizean lass, raised a family, had lots of fun and made (and lost, and then made back) a lot of money. Here he relates some of his early experiences after arriving in Belize and how he adapted and succeeded in Belize.
On the following pages he writes about how he started out as an expat, learned the ropes, operated several successful businesses, and eventualy retired in style in Belize.
